Cool Perfumed Wines for Hot Steamy Nights
As the South East corner becomes warmer and a touch sticky, there is no better way to relax after a long day than with a cool glass of any of the many Aromatic White Wines now available.
Up until recently we have not seen many German or Alsace wines in Australia, but today they are starting to appear on the shelves and on the wine lists largely due to the value of the dollar.
The German wines you will find in Australia are “Robert Weil” from Rheingau, “Joh. Jos. Prum” and “Dr Loosen” from Mosel Saar Ruwer, "Egon Muller" & "Selbach Oster", from Rheingau, "Schloss Vollrads" and "Emrich-Schonleber" from Nahe. The German wines are often sweeter, however drier styles can be found.
The Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris from Alsace are bigger, richer wines with a Germanic feel. Wonderfully Aromatic, the brands you will find in Queensland are “Dopff Au Moulin,” “Trimbach,” “Hugel,” “Wolfburger,” “Cave de Beblenheim” and “Albert Mann.”
Alsace is one of the easiest regions to visit in France. All the vineyards are open to all visitors, the villages are easy to travel between and the wines are all found in the villages at very competitive prices. Many of these Alsace wines can be found in fine wine bottle shops for $18 - $40. Alsace Whites are great with fuller flavoured food.
However, there is an increased interest in all Aromatic Wine styles.
Australian winemakers in the cooler wine regions are beginning to plant more of the Aromatic Varietals, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Gruner Veltliner and the Italian Varietal Vermentino. Australian Riesling producers are producing better, more aromatic Rieslings and the 2013 Vintage was a cracker for most Riesling producing regions.
Many of these wines have the potential to live for a very long time, if you can resist the temptation to enjoy a glass on a Summer evening, with take-away Thai or Chinese. Pewsey Vale Eden Valley Prima Riesling is a perfectly balanced off Dry Riesling, pristine, zesty and succulent, racy lemon sorbet and spicy kaffir lime notes, with mineral acidity, you'll find it for around $27.00.
6.00pm Thursday 10th April could well be one of those hot steamy nights, and what better way to enjoy the evening than to attend the "Riesling and Aromatic White Wines" from Around the World. The evening will include 16 Aromatic Whites from around the World, two course Thai menu & Bound course notes all for $109. Book in today or buy a gift voucher for a friend.
